READY, AIM, TASE

A.V. woman demonstrates product at parties

   APPLE VALLEY
• A group of mostly women gather at a friend’s home and pass around products they consider purchasing.

But this is not a cheerful Tupperware party — it’s a serious Taser demonstration.
Lisa Lawrence, of Apple Valley, takes time to explain to everyone exactly how to hold, handle and use the Taser C2, a personal Taser for use by the general public.
L aw re n ce, a re t i re d California Highway Patrol captain, started her business, ReadyAim.com, when she read about an Apple Valley woman who was kidnapped from a gas station at gunpoint and sexually assaulted.
“I thought to myself, ‘If she would have had a Taser, that may not have happened,’ ” Lawrence said.
A Taser C2 shoots out two small probes connected to thin wires, emitting a 50,000-volt electrical pulse into an attacker. The jolt causes the muscles to contract, incapacitating the aggressor.
Once in hand, the device also can be used as a contact stun-gun.
The personal Taser provides people with a form of protection that is not lethal and allows victims to get away from danger, Lawrence said.
Lawrence’s aunt, Robin Blackwell-Bradley, of Orange County, helped her start the business. Lawrence and Blackwell-Bradley set up demonstrations for companies as well as private citizens.
“I thought that they were a wise investment,” said Gary Stater, owner of Gary Stater Realty. He purchased four of the personal protection devices for his staff. The Taser C2 models run about $350.
I t i s n o t u n co m - mon for Stater and his employees to encounter squatters when they enter foreclosed properties, he said.
It’s just a matter of time before someone living inside a vacant property becomes belligerent, so having the Taser will help keep Stater’s employees safe, said Penny Wanspen, office manager for the realty company.
Lawrence saw the effectiveness of the nonlethal device during the latter part of her 22-year career with the CHP.
“A lot of times the officers didn’t even need to use the Tasers,” she said. “Suspects complied just by seeing it.”
B u t h av i n g t h e device is not enough and Lawrence makes it a point to give new and potential customers all the information they need to be comfortable using the Taser.
The device demonstration made all the difference for Stater and his staff.
“I have to be honest, I had my Taser for a full week before the rest of the staff and I would not have been comfortable using it had it not been for Lisa’s training,” Stater said. “Now that I have fired it — and she taught us the proper stance and we shot at a target — we saw how effective it really was.”

TASER FOR SALE: Lisa Lawrence, of Apple Valley, fires off her Taser C2, a personal Taser for public use. Lawrence now sells the Tasers through parties, like Tupperware or Avon.

October 25, 2008 - Apple Valley Rotary Chili Cookoff.  This was somewhat of a kickoff event to introduce the Taser C2 to the High Desert and chili cook community.  There was a great deal of interest in the taser.

October 27, 2008 - A Titanium Silver Taser C2 and black neoprene cover was donated to the silent auction being held at the Nov. 1st fundraiser dinner for CHP Officer Tony Pedeferri.  Tony is a very courageous man, a loving husband and father, and a tremendous athlete.  Tony's life and that of his family was changed forever last December when, while working the beat, he was hit by a driver who was under the influence.  Tony suffered extremely severe injuries, including paralysis below his shoulders, and was hospitalized for over seven months.  Tony, who has completed the Ironman Triathlon among other feats, has worked hard to recover to the degree possible and would like to get back to competing.  The fundraiser was to help him earn money for a new racing chair and also to help fund his foundation which will provide sports equipment to others who have been injured.   If you want to read an inspirational story of love, courage,  and forgiveness, go to www.caringbridge.org/visit/tonypedeferri.  Bring your tissues with you.

November 2008 - The Daily Press News Story brought numerous phone calls and inquiries.  One was from a very nice woman who lives in Hesperia.  This woman, who I will refer to as "B", was in a very public parking lot walking to her car in early afternoon when she was carjacked at knifepoint by three teenagers.  They took her purse and her car, but they didn't take her wonderful spirit and attitude.  "B" saw the Daily Press story and gave me a call.  She does not want to be a victim ever again, but she also does not want to take a life defending herself.  I gladly met her at her house and gave a one on one training session.  She purchased a Fashion Pink Taser C2 with matching holster.  Before I left, I activated her taser and coached her as she shot a practice cartridge into a target.  It felt good to know that "B" has an effective way to protect herself and has more peace of mind.

On the same day I met "B", I did a presentation to a Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) group.  We had an interactive discussion about personal safety and I introduced them to the Taser C2.   They would like to book a Taser Training session that includes their husbands.
